BCSS Updates for the 1st Day of School!

Posted by Robert Costley in General  |  Post a comment

Dear BCSS Families,

I wanted to take a moment this morning and send you a quick update about Butts County School System.

First, I hope all of you have enjoyed a wonderful summer. While our children and teachers have been out on summer break, we have been busying ordering supplies, cleaning and waxing, making repairs, planning improvements of our academic program, and taking care of last-minute preparations to make the 2017-2018 school year the best in history for our 3400 students!

The first day of school is Wednesday, August 9, and our Open House Schedule is:

·         Pre-K and Kindergarten@6 PM on Wednesday, August 2, at each elementary school

·         Grades 1-5@5-7 PM on Thursday, August 3

·         Grades 6-12@6-8 PM on Thursday, August 3 (JHS Freshmen will be at 5 PM at the JHS Gymnasium)

When you return, you and our students will see a great deal of improvements to help us start the year. Because of the community’s support for E-SPLOST last March, your school system facilities are improving as we speak:

1.       JHS students will open the year with a new band room, chorus room, NJROTC lab, and Healthcare Sciences lab. It is possible that we may have a few little details to finish in the first few weeks of school, but by Labor Day, we plan to be running strong with our new classrooms.

2.       We have been working on new “Safety Entrances” for the three elementary schools and HMS. As we speak, we are installing new front-entrance pathways such that all guests at the schools will be directed into the office before they are admitted into the hallways. This means that we will be having new procedures for admitting our parents, volunteers, and welcome guests into the building, so please be patient with us in the first few weeks as we work out the kinks.

The best thing is, our new safety entrances will be designed to make it more difficult for intruders to walk in the hallways of our campuses without our permission, and this will make our students and staff safer in their daily learning and working.

Most likely, the new safety entrances will not be ready for Open House and the 1st Day of School (due to manufacturing delays), but it is our expectation that they will be installed and ready to go only a few weeks after school starts.

3.       If you look at the land area between HMS and JHS, you will see a great deal of construction and mud where our bus path and trees used to be. This will be our new softball field for the Lady Devils and Tigers, our new modern track and field facility, and our new band-practice/soccer field facility. It is our hope that the soccer field will be ready for the spring varsity season this school year, and our softball field and band-practice field we be ready to go for next fall (2018).

No matter the age of your children, I hope you can see that they have a lot to look forward to in the years to come in our academic opportunities, in the fine arts, and in our athletic programs. Each summer that passes, we are working to take three steps forward in improving our school system in these three areas for our boys and girls and our community. We have come a long way because of your support, and if we keep working together, there is no limit to what we can accomplish right here in Butts County, GA. We just have to believe in ourselves, our community, and our children!

In the meantime, I hope you enjoy the last few days of your child’s summer vacation. It’s still not too late to work on their literacy and math skills by reading with them every day and playing some math puzzle games around the kitchen table at night.

I look forward to seeing you all at Open House in a few weeks!

Sincerely,

Robert Costley
